Contamination of pine and birch wood dust with microscopic fungi and determination of its sterol contents.

چکیده
Wood compounds, especially sterols, are connected with the level of contamination with microscopic fungi. Within this study, tests were conducted on wood dust samples collected at various work stations in a pine and birch timber conversion plant. Their contamination with mycobiota was measured as the concentration of ergosterol (ERG) by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). Another aim of this study was to assess the effect of contamination with microscopic fungi on the sterol contents in wood dusts. Analyses were conducted on five sterols: desmosterol, cholesterol, lanosterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol using UPLC and their presence was confirmed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results of chemical analyses showed the greatest contamination with mycobiota in birch wood dust. We also observed varied contents of individual sterols depending on the wood dust type. Their highest concentration was detected in birch dust. The discriminant analysis covering all tested compounds as predictors showed complete separation of all tested wood dust types. The greatest discriminatory power was found for stigmasterol, desmosterol, and ergosterol.

The evaluation of microfungal contamination of dust created during woodworking in furniture factories.
BACKGROUND Microscopic fungi are the biological agent of occupational risk in the woodworking environment. Microbiological and chemical methods were used for determination of their concentration and species composition in dust. MATERIAL AND METHODS Dust was sampled in 3 factories producing furniture using different materials. The 1st factory (A) processes solid wood, the 2nd (B) - chipboards ...
متن کامل2-methylanthraquinone as a marker of occupational exposure to teak wood dust in boatyards.
A new gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) method was developed to detect 2-methylanthraquinone (2-MeA) in wood dust. 2-MeA is present in teak wood (a suspected human carcinogen) but not in oak, beech, mahogany, birch, ash or pine. The method involved collection of workplace dust on filters and extraction of 2-MeA with methanol and GC/MS analysis. The method was tested on teak wood du...
متن کاملThe effects of pine wood vinegar on the germination, growth and photosynthetic characteristics of cucumber
Wood vinegar is a substance, derived from cooling black carbon fire, which could be used instead of chemical materials in the agriculture industry as an organic compound. In order to study the effectiveness of pine wood vinegar on physiological and photosynthesis traits of cucumber, two experiments were conducted based on a completely randomized design with six treatments including 0, 1250, 200...
متن کاملFungi Isolated from Pine Wood Nematode, Its Vector Japanese Pine Sawyer, and the Nematode-Infected Japanese Black Pine Wood in Korea
Pine tree death caused by pine wood nematode (PWN) involves phoretic relationships between PWN and its vector Japanese pine sawyer beetle (JPS). In an effort to understand the diversity of fungi involved in PWN life cycle, a total of 176 fungal isolates were collected from PWNs, adults and larvae of JPS, PWN-diseased Japanese black pine that was cut down in 2005 at Jinju, Korea. Based on micros...
متن کاملRecommendation from the Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits: Risk assessment for Wood Dust
Woods are customarily divided into two types: hardwood and softwood. Softwoods are generally conifers (pine, fir, spruce, cedar, etc.) and hardwoods come from deciduous trees (oak, beech, ash, silver birch, etc.) and from certain tropical species (mahogany, teak, etc.). This distinction is purely botanical, softwoods corresponding to the gymnosperms and hardwoods to the angiosperms, and certain...
